A librarian once tried to stop my brother from checking out a book, but it seems to have been more a concern about whether it was too advance for him than any concern about content. He took offense and responded by opening the book and reading it to the librarian. Our mom wasn't too happy when she found out.

I did have a bizarre experience regarding book banning. I used to live in a small town and I found several books, including CS Lewis' Space Trilogy and a collection of Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton had been miscataloged as children's books. I could understand the Space Trilogy - someone saw "CS Lewis" and thought it was the Chronicles of Narnia in space. I never figured out the Father Brown collection - I know Chesterton is supposed be a great writer but I found them a slog. How anyone could think they were kids books is beyond me - maybe they thought it was the same as Encyclopedia Brown? I said something to the clerks but basically got brushed off. It turned out the only way to pursue it would have been to file a complaint to get the banned - which I did not want to do I just wanted them cataloged correctly as adult fiction. So I didn't pursue it. It's a rather conservative town so I hope they don't end up with a complaint from some parent who was expecting the Space Epic of Narnia.
